The Hidden Germs in Your Kitchen—and Why What You Clean With Matters

When we think about the germiest place in the house, most of us immediately think of the bathroom.

But surprisingly, the kitchen can be an even bigger hotspot.

In a study by NSF, coliform bacteria were found on more than 75% of dish sponges and rags tested, as well as 45% of kitchen sinks and 32% of countertops.

Considering this is the space where we prepare food, wash dishes and spend time every day, keeping our kitchens clean is important. But there is another question worth asking:

What are we bringing into the air while we clean?

Cleaning the Kitchen Without Overlooking Indoor Air

Many conventional cleaning products can release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air. VOCs are gases emitted from certain products, including some cleansers, disinfectants and aerosol sprays. According to the EPA, levels of some organic pollutants can be higher indoors than outdoors, and concentrations may remain elevated after a product has been used.

This doesn't mean every conventional cleaner is automatically dangerous, or that every product labelled “natural” is automatically safe. Ingredients still matter, and so does ventilation.

The American Lung Association notes that cleaning supplies and fragrances can contribute to indoor air pollution and may cause symptoms such as eye, nose or throat irritation, headaches and other respiratory symptoms in some people.

This is why we believe that creating a cleaner kitchen is about more than simply making every surface sparkle. It's also about being mindful of the products you use every day and the air you're breathing while using them.

Simple Swaps for a More Mindful Kitchen

You don't need to throw everything away and replace your entire cleaning cupboard overnight. Sometimes, creating a more conscious home starts with the small things you reach for every day.

1. Start with your dish soap

Your dish soap comes into contact with the plates, glasses and cookware you use every day. Our favorite Natural Dish Soap by Puracy is a plant-derived formula designed to cut through grease while being gentle on hands. It is vegan and hypoallergenic and is made without sulfates, parabens or triclosan.

2.Rethink your everyday surface cleaner

Kitchen counters, tables and other frequently used surfaces are cleaned constantly. Our Natural Multi-Surface Cleaner Concentrate by Puracy offers a concentrated option that can be diluted for everyday cleaning. The formula is biodegradable, vegan and made without sulfates or phosphates.

3.Don't forget your stainless steel

Stainless steel appliances can quickly become covered in fingerprints, splashes and everyday kitchen mess. A dedicated Natural Stainless Steel Surface Cleaner can help you care for these surfaces without reaching for unnecessarily harsh and toxic cleaning options.

4.Swap disposable tools for longer-lasting ones

Your cleaning tools matter too. A Bamboo Pot Scrubber is a simple addition to your kitchen routine and can help replace disposable plastic-heavy scrubbers.

The same goes for the little details that make your kitchen feel more intentional. Our Coconut Shell and Bamboo Holder Bars bring a natural, handmade element into the space while giving discarded wood a second purpose.

Creating a Kitchen You Feel Good In

A clean kitchen is important—but “clean” doesn't have to mean a strong chemical smell.

In fact, fragrance can be another factor to consider when choosing household products. Fragranced cleaning products can release chemicals into indoor air, and people with asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivities may be particularly affected.

Whenever you are using any cleaning product, it's still a good idea to follow the instructions on the label and keep your space well ventilated. And never mix cleaning products unless the label specifically says it is safe to do so.

For us, a more mindful kitchen isn't about perfection or replacing everything at once. It's about becoming more aware of the products we use repeatedly and making better swaps where we can.

Maybe that starts with your dish soap. Maybe it's your multi-surface cleaner. Or maybe it's simply replacing one disposable kitchen tool with something you can use and enjoy for longer.

Small swaps can add up.
