In Ayurveda, the nose is seen as the gateway to prana — the vital life force. Clear nasal passages allow not just for unimpeded breathing, but for optimal absorption of the subtle energies, proper functioning of the senses, and balance of the doshas. One of the foundational daily rituals (dinacharya) is the practice of nasal cleansing — using neti, nasya and supportive oils — for physical, mental, and energetic wellbeing.
Why Nasal Cleansing?
-Clearing excess mucus, pollen, pollutants: Helps reduce the burden on sinuses, supports respiratory health, and can reduce allergy symptoms.
-Balancing doshas: Kapha can accumulate in the nasal passages; a regular cleansing helps reduce congestion, heaviness, and lethargy associated with excess Kapha.
-Enhancing clarity of mind and senses: When the channels are clean, smell, taste, hearing, and all sensory inputs function better; mental clarity improves.
-Support for breathwork & meditation: Clean nostrils make pranayama (breathing exercises) more effective; energy flows more freely.
How to Do It: Neti, Nasya & More
Here is a simple routine you can follow:
1.Neti – using a neti pot and salt water:
-Warm water + neti salt → gently flush through one nostril, letting it flow out the other.
-Tilt head, keep mouth open slightly; repeat the other side.
-Dry gently, then follow with a nasal oil to prevent dryness and nourish delicate tissue.
2.Nasya – applying oil or medicated drops inside the nose:
-After neti, or on its own (especially before bed or when sinuses feel blocked), a few drops of nourishing nose oil support lubrication, soothe irritation, and maintain mucosal health.
3.Supportive elements – such as aromatic salts, ensuring water is clean and at the right temperature, using pure, gentle oil etc.
To help you start or deepen your nasal care routine, here are three Ayurvedic products designed to work in harmony:
-Neti Pot
A beautifully crafted pot for gentle nasal irrigation. Helps you practice Neti easily and effectively. Simply mix warm salt water (approx. ¼ tsp salt to ½ cup water), tilt the head, allow solution to flow from one nostril to the other, and repeat both sides. After Neti, oil is applied to prevent dryness.
-Aromatic Neti Salt
This is the salt you use with the Neti pot. It’s aromatic—which can provide mild soothing and a more pleasant experience. Aromatic salts can help reduce irritation and add gentle fragrance which can enhance feelings of calm and clarity.
-Nose Oil (Nasya Oil)
After cleansing, this oil helps re-moisturise the nasal passages, soothe any dryness, reduce itch or irritation, and support mucosal integrity. It’s perfect for nightly use, or whenever dryness or congestion lingers.
